Gruner Veltliner is one of the planet’s most underrated white grape varieties. Native to Austria, it’s unusually versatile with hard-to-pair green vegetables like asparagus; plus, it has the perfect acidity needed to pair with fried foods. Gruner ranges in style from crisp and zesty to rich and complex and everything in between. You can even find sparkling or dessert versions of it! One of our new favorites that balances the “crisp and zesty” style with complex flavors and minerality is the 2022 Weingut Geyerhof ‘StockWerk’, which earned an impressive 90 Point score in Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

This is a classic Gruner Veltliner. Aromas of stone fruits and white flowers lead into green apple, grass, white pepper, and lemon on the palate. It is clean and crisp with zesty acidity, yet it offers a round mouthfeel. The finish is long and mineral.

“A rather shy nose hints at some yeasty savoriness and wet pebble. The palate comes with generous, ripe freshness. Citrus is subdued and folded in with a yeasty texture, while bright glimpses of lemon highlight the gentle pepper.” – 90 Points, Wine Enthusiast
